Questions about our diamonds, tanzanite and services
Are your diamonds natural?
Yes. When we say "diamond", we always mean a natural diamond. Stones with no natural equivalent, such as cubic zirconia and moissanite, are always named as what they are.
Do your stones come with a certificate?
Many do, and we always name the lab: GIA, EGL, or our own Knysna Jewellers tanzanite certificate. Ask us which certificate a piece carries.
Is tanzanite treated?
Almost all tanzanite is gently heated to bring out its blue; this is standard across the trade, so we do not note it piece by piece. Any other treatment or enhancement is always disclosed.
Can I claim back VAT as a visitor?
Yes. We give visitors the paperwork to claim back VAT when they leave South Africa.
Do you ship?
Yes, with tracking: R480 per order within South Africa and R1,500 per order to Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. Customs duties and taxes in your country are not included. If your country is not listed, please contact us before ordering.
Can you make a piece to my design?
Yes. Start at either shop; we make it in our Woodmill Lane workshop. A custom piece needs a deposit, which is non-refundable once work begins because the piece is made to your design. Quotes are valid for 14 days.
Where can I have a piece repaired or resized?
At Knysna Manufacturing Jewellers in Woodmill Lane, where our workshop is. We may ask for a deposit, and pieces not collected within six months of our call are treated as abandoned.
Do you do valuations for insurance?
Yes. Our written valuation states the replacement value for insurance on the day it is issued; we suggest a new one every two to three years.
Can I return a piece?
In our shops, we do not offer refunds or exchanges for a change of mind or the wrong size, so please take your time to choose. If a genuine defect appears within six months, we repair, replace or refund it under the Consumer Protection Act. If you buy on our website, you may cancel within seven days of receiving the goods; this does not apply to custom-made or engraved pieces. Full details are in our terms of sale.
What is the Care Plan?
A free preventive-care plan for one new piece of R40,000 or more bought from us from 1 November 2026: we inspect, tighten, clean and value it once a year for three years. It is not insurance or a repair service. Read the Care Plan terms.
Which shop should I visit?
Both shops carry diamonds and tanzanite and can start a custom design with you. For repairs, resizing and Care Plan services, visit Knysna Manufacturing Jewellers in Woodmill Lane. Knysna Diamond Corporation on the Waterfront is open later in summer.
When are you open?
Woodmill Lane: Monday to Friday 09:00–17:00, Saturday and public holidays 09:00–13:00, closed Sunday. Waterfront: in summer (1 Sep–30 Apr) Monday to Saturday 09:00–19:00 and Sunday and public holidays 09:00–17:00; in winter (1 May–31 Aug) Monday to Saturday 09:00–17:00 and Sunday and public holidays 09:00–15:00. Both shops are closed on Christmas Day.
How should I look after my jewellery?
Take it off for swimming, the gym and housework; clean it with mild soapy water and a soft brush; store each piece separately so stones cannot scratch each other; and let us check the claws once a year.
